The Nucu Pad soothes your baby with gentle sounds and vibrations. It also senses your baby’s sleep patterns and status. Starting this week, we’re rolling out a powerful new feature that combines both soothing and sensing: Adaptive Feelscapes®.
What are Adaptive Feelscapes?
Adaptive Feelscapes automatically respond to your baby’s sleep behavior by adjusting the intensity of the Feelscape (the soothing sounds and vibrations). In other words:
- When your baby stirs, the Nucu Pad responds with gentle support
- When your baby enters deep sleep, the Nucu Pad gradually becomes silent
This dynamic adjustment is designed to:
- Help babies move into the next sleep phase despite brief arousal
- Provide a sense of security and comfort when needed
- Support healthy sleep habits by reducing long-term reliance on always-on sleep aids
How Adaptive Feelscapes help families get better sleep
Night wakings are a natural part of your baby's sleep development. With shorter sleep cycles than adults and frequent developmental leaps, babies naturally wake more often throughout the night.
While some wakings are necessary – for feeding or comfort – others are brief transitions between sleep cycles where your baby might just need a gentle reminder that they're safe and secure.
The Nucu Pad’s new Adaptive Feelscapes feature supports your baby’s developing sleep skills – particularly their ability to self-soothe.
When the Nucu Pad senses your baby stirring, it automatically adjusts the Feelscape’s intensity. If that momentary wake-up is brief and your baby’s basic needs (such as nutrition or comfort) are already met, the soothing can help them slip back into deeper sleep without requiring caregiver intervention.
Parents gain valuable support, but never at the expense of missing important cues from their baby. We've carefully designed Adaptive Feelscapes to complement rather than override your baby's natural signals. The built-in smart baby monitor ensures you'll always hear when your little one truly needs you.
What is the science behind Adaptive Feelscapes
The Adaptive Feelscapes has been developed at Nucu with support from childcare professionals, test families and sleep coaches.
“Adaptive Feelscapes is the first of many upcoming features that combine the Nucu Pad’s capacity for both soothing and sensing features. By dynamically adapting to the baby's calmness, the Adaptive Feelscape increases and decreases as needed, helping to ensure a more restful and peaceful sleep for both babies and parents”, says Laura Nauha, Research Scientist at Nucu.
The Nucu Pad’s unique features create a feedback loop that goes beyond traditional sensing technologies.
Hannu Kinnunen, former Chief Scientific Officer at Oura and Scientific Advisor at Nucu, explains: “Using its sensors and algorithms, the Nucu Pad can distinguish between different sleep patterns and stages. What's more, it can respond to those patterns with total autonomy through its haptic features – much like parents have been doing for millennia.”
When is Adaptive Feelscapes available?
Adaptive Feelscapes will begin rolling out on January 27, 2025 for the Nucu iOS app.
Families already using the Nucu Pad will see the new feature appear in their Nucu App over the coming days – just update your app to check if it’s live for you.
If you don’t have a Nucu Pad yet, you can order it from the Nucu Shop in Finland and Sweden.
